Culinary Repertoire
I enjoy cooking. It is something I’ve always taken something of an interest in. Perhaps because I like food.
However, I don’t do enough cooking. There’s various reasons for this. In part my wife works from home, likes cooking and generally wants to eat around when I get home. So while I occasionally cook in the week, it’s more often at weekends. The danger is that the things I end up cooking then are quick, which is no bad thing. However because we’ve not thought in advance or have busy days, it’s often an effort to come up with ideas spur of the moment. It also varies and I don’t feel mastery of any meal particularly.
The idea of a culinary repertoire, which I first encountered in https://www.saveur.com/make-a-culinary-resolution/, is something that appeals to me to counteract some of the above. A set of well-trod and well-liked meals. Things to be able to put together on demand, short notice, without a huge amount of recipe book peering.
I’ve not got far with that, mainly as we’re not that regular with meal choices on weekends, and perhaps surprisingly, time — that is partly the fault of recipe choice.
Do I think a kick start is in order. And perhaps some accountability. To that end I’m going to pick say 2 things to do at least once a month, until I know them. I’ll report back occasionally with how they are going.
I’ve been having a think and have come up with:
- Beef Stew
- Vegetable Lasagne
I’ve not specified a recipe to follow for these, it might take a few goes to pick a base and then I’ll no doubt adapt it, I’ll probably share the ‘final’ output if it makes sense.
