A running update & footnotes

Since the last running update I’ve got not much further down the C25K road. There’s a couple of reasons, most notably an injured foot.

I’ve been on holiday as well, while I had intended to run over the holiday the foot put paid to that. The injury was a blister immediately rubbed raw. The cause? A shoe that didn’t fit as well as I thought, when running sockless. Live and learn. The shoes are fine with socks, so it’s either them being new(ish) and they are in need of more wearing, or I should wear socks. It healed after a week or so, with a fair bit of walking around while on holiday. I’ve been repeating Week 8, which went a little better this time.

I have been reading about running in the interim, namely in the form of Footloose” by Vybarr Cregan-Reid. An interesting read, a trip both through the world while running and through the benefits of running. Touring though historic writings and modern laboratories, to attempt to discern what we gain from this endeavour. Inspiring you to run, explore, trespass a little and enjoy the world around you.

It fits in somewhat with my thoughts of the calming impact of running. The enjoyment of getting out in the world. Also the increased speed is a good way to get more exploring done in a shorter time. I’d recommended a read of it for thoughts about running, not about speedy running.

I’ve been contemplating the difference between running with and without music. I have been running with headphones, as I’ve been using them for C25K. Sometimes with music playing and sometimes without. Mainly I’ve been trying to keep the with to only around work, as it’s fairly miserable and the escapism seems good. Around home and greenery I like to not be so cut off. Eventually I’d like to go with Vybarr’s method, no music, no GPS, no care, just the run and the world. Maybe when I’ve got C25K done I’ll try that a little.
